The Starlighters organization asked council for permission to remove a large tree in front of their building to improve visibility for a proposed marquee and address pest/maintenance concerns. City staff said the tree is large, likely the largest on Main Street besides others near Wapsi Physical Therapy, and advised cutting with stump grinding rather than full root removal to preserve adjacent infrastructure. The public works superintendent cautioned that there is buried electrical and recommended locating the wiring prior to stump work.
Council approved the removal and discussed temporary electrical workarounds for downtown festivals if the underground connection is disrupted. Staff said they will follow up to locate electrical lines and coordinate festival power arrangements before removal and stump grinding.
