The Peru Board of Public Works voted to change the city’s employee insurance eligibility from a 90‑day waiting period to coverage effective on the date of hire, with the policy to take effect Sept. 1, 2026. The change was presented as applying across all departments and was approved after a motion, second and unanimous affirmative votes.
Board members said the shift is designed to help recruiting and ease lateral transfers for fire and police. "One of the reasons is it'll help with recruiting," a board member said during the discussion, adding that the city has budgeted for the change for the year and that it should not affect the overall budget. The board recorded no opposing votes and confirmed the policy will be implemented beginning 09/01/2026.
