The Village of Spring Grove Safety Committee met Feb. 4 and discussed the police department budget, focusing on wages, the police pension and incentives to attract new officers. After extended discussion, members agreed a policy should be created regarding hiring benefits and that overtime will not be included in this budget year.
Committee members examined the trade-offs between paying existing, vested officers and covering costs for new-officer training. Police Chief Mike Niedzwiecki participated in the discussion on training costs; the committee concluded that a formal hiring-benefits policy is needed to clarify future bonus or incentive use. No formal vote was recorded on the hiring-benefits policy; the minutes record a consensus to develop the policy and to exclude overtime from the current year’s budget.
