The committee approved a recommendation that the parish stop absorbing school cash online convenience fees and instead pass those fees to consumers (parents). Business staff told the committee the parish absorbed about $300,000 in convenience fees last year and that parents will retain the option to pay by check or cash at the school.
Staff described the vendor’s charges as roughly 10 cents per item plus about 4% of the transaction total. The committee noted concerns about donations and high-value transactions; staff said they would provide clear communication to families and that the change would likely take effect midyear or at the beginning of the next school year after vendor adjustments.
"Just this year last year alone, it cost us about $300,000 to absorb those convenience fees," the business manager said during the discussion.
