Sheriff proposes county-branded mobile app to share alerts, jail and resource information

Sheriff Chuck Heit introduced a proposal for a Berrien County–branded mobile application intended to deliver news, push alerts, jail and inmate information, and maps of resources to residents.
David Garrison, representing the app’s developer (a subsidiary of OCVApps), described features including push notifications, press releases, jail/inmate information, sex-offender maps, custom forms and appointment reminders. "They currently serve over 1,000 sheriff offices," Garrison said, and the presentation noted the product can be tailored to local needs.
Heit told commissioners the sheriff’s office has funding to cover initial implementation and ongoing annual costs, framing the project as a public-safety and communication tool rather than a new county expense. The presentation did not include a vote or a contract decision; commissioners did not ask for a procurement action during the meeting.
The County Clerk’s minutes list the app’s features and record that Heit said funding is in place for rollout. The item was presented as information to the board; the next steps for procurement, formal approval or public rollout were not specified in the minutes.
