Trustees adopt immigration‑enforcement response policy and demand SRO protocols after local incident

Trustees voted to adopt updated board policy language governing responses to immigration-enforcement officers on district property, but the vote followed an extended debate about how campus staff and school resource officers (SROs) should respond if federal agents do not identify themselves or lack a judicial warrant.

Board members read the policy language aloud and pressed administrators about safeguards. One trustee warned that agents in 'green tac gear and masks' could assert federal authority without presenting identification. "Just because someone claims to be a federal agent does not give them the authority to just detain you or literally rip you out of your car," the trustee said, urging the district to require verification and judicial warrants before allowing entry to nonpublic areas.

Superintendent Eddie Zuniga said staff will engage the chiefs of police and the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department and meet with school resource officers to clarify what verification they will require and how they will respond on campus, at school‑sponsored events and during drop‑off and pick‑up times. Trustees repeatedly requested written, site‑level protocols for how SROs and deputies should handle requests by federal agents who do not present a judicial warrant or proper identification.

Trustees also asked for assurances about the district's ability to protect student rights at off‑hour activities, sporting events and community protests. The board passed the policy update by unanimous voice vote and directed staff to return with clarified protocols and guidance for principals and SROs.
