District reports dip in chronic absenteeism; corrective-action plan remains in place

The Toms River Regional School District presented an update on its attendance corrective-action plan and chronic absenteeism during the Oct. 31 committee meetings. Mrs. DeMeo told the board that under New Jersey Department of Education rules a district must implement a corrective-action plan when chronic absenteeism exceeds 10%, and she reported that the district’s rate fell from about 15.12% in 23-24 to 14.35% in 24-25.
Mrs. DeMeo said the district will continue school-based attendance committees and a menu of interventions — including school-based mentors, individualized or group counseling and attendance pacts with families — and that the plan this year is largely the same as prior years. “So our corrective action plan looks the same as it looked the last couple of years,” she said. The presenter added that about 70–75% of schools have shown reductions since last October and that additional resources and communications to families are available in the packet and online.
