El Monte Union trustees honor five QuestBridge scholars, students describe Ivy and technical matches

The El Monte Union High School District Board of Trustees on Feb. 4 recognized five students who were selected as QuestBridge National College Match scholars, honoring their academic achievements and leadership.
Superintendent Eddie Zuniga told the board that the district had five students selected across its high schools and described QuestBridge as a program that matches high-achieving, low-income students with four-year scholarships. "There's over 50 universities that participate in the QuestBridge program," Zuniga said, outlining that a full scholarship can cover tuition, housing, food and other expenses.
Students took turns at the lectern to announce their matches and thank teachers, counselors and family. "I matched to Claremont McKenna College," one student said. Another student said, "I matched to Princeton University and I plan on studying mathematics or physics," and described the emotion of receiving the notification.
Trustees and student trustees congratulated the scholars and urged them to return and share their experiences with younger students. Board President Florencia Briones encouraged the scholars to come back to campus during breaks to mentor underclassmen.
The recognition underscores the district's focus on college access and the role of counselors and campus support in students' postsecondary pathways. The board presented certificates and posed for photos with scholars and families following the recognition.
