McFarland council approves $87,500 media‑cleaning for Garzoli well to extend arsenic filter life

City staff recommended and the council approved Resolution 20‑26‑4 to fund cleaning of the Garzoli well’s arsenic removal media. Public works staff explained the filtration media, installed in 2018–19, is reaching the end of its useful life and an inspection by Lane Company concluded effectiveness has declined; Lane recommended cleaning rather than replacing the proprietary media as a cost saving. Staff said the adopted Water Fund CIP included $85,000 and recommended a $2,500 midyear adjustment so the $87,500 project can proceed, to be paid from water enterprise revenues and not the general fund.
Yuliz Hernandez, presenting the item for staff, described the recommendation and cost, saying, “The financial impact of this project, the total cost for the media, cleaning is, $87,000 $87,500” and that cleaning avoids an eventual replacement that could cost two to three times as much. Council members asked clarifying questions about frequency of cleaning and long‑term replacement risk; staff said inspections and cleaning are expected every six to eight years. After discussion the council approved the resolution by roll call.
