County board approves DNR grant application to fight New Zealand mud snails

Nathaniel Bruce moved and the board approved a resolution authorizing Vernon County to apply for an $8,800 Department of Natural Resources Early Detection and Response grant to address New Zealand mud snails. Bruce said the county would partner with the West Fork Sportsman's Club and Coulee Region Trout Unlimited; those partners will provide the 25% match and assist with volunteer training and site selection.
"It would be an $8,800 grant," Bruce told the board, outlining three primary activities: building boot‑brush stations at priority public easements, training volunteer early‑detectors under Project RED and conducting outreach and signage. Speakers discussed the limits of station coverage and the plan to place roughly 20 stations across priority sites and easements; the resolution passed by voice vote with no county fiscal obligation for the match.
