McFarland council approves employment agreement for new deputy chief Brandon Rutledge

The McFarland City Council voted to approve an employment agreement with Brandon Rutledge, appointing him deputy chief of police effective April 22, 2026. City staff presented Rutledge's recruitment background and recommended the resolution; council approved the measure by roll call.

City staff described Rutledge as bringing extensive law-enforcement experience and certifications. Human-resources staffer Serena McEwen summarized the appointment: "Following a comprehensive recruitment process, Mr. Rutledge has been selected as deputy chief of police, with effective date of today, 04/22/2026," and said the agreement includes "an annual salary of $120,000 a year plus benefits." Council members voiced support for the selection before the vote.

The resolution authorizes the city manager to finalize the appointment and directs staff to implement the employment terms. Councilors said they expect Rutledge to provide oversight and community engagement that will address public-safety concerns raised by longtime residents. The council approved the resolution in a roll-call vote that was recorded as passing unanimously among members present.
