Mayor Fitzpatrick and Fire Chief Dan Crutchfield led the council in a recognition ceremony for Lieutenant Wade Matthews, who will retire Dec. 30 after 25 years of service to Astoria. Chief Crutchfield highlighted Matthews’ role as HAZMAT Team 11 coordinator and presented a retirement plate and remarks acknowledging his commitment to training, interagency coordination and community service.
Chief Crutchfield also presented Lifesaver awards to a group of firefighters for a Nov. 26 call in which crews applied a ZOLL monitor, used a Lucas CPR device, established IO access and administered epinephrine; the patient regained a pulse during transport and has since been released. "You worked as a team and you saved a life," Chief Crutchfield said, thanking the crew and partner agencies.
