Council holds off on RFP for rec center after $52 million estimate

City staff and council reviewed responses to a request-for-proposals for development of a 20-acre parcel purchased from the Miller family near the golf course. The RFP drew two submissions from design/engineering firms; staff said the firms provided introductory materials but withheld schematic plans until contracted.
Council member Todd Thomas relayed the firms’ preliminary capacity estimates. “If we design that and it has everything that your survey wants in it, they figure about 40,000 square feet. They estimated a cost of that community rec center at $52,000,000,” Thomas said. Council members expressed shock at the figure and emphasized that the city does not have that level of funding available.
Members discussed lower-cost alternatives for the property, including walking paths and open space, and noted the rec center itself would be the most expensive component. Staff recommended holding the firms’ contact information and waiting to see how county discussions (item previously removed from the agenda) proceed before committing funds; council moved to table active procurement and revisit the issue next year.
The RFP review will remain on staff’s radar; the council asked staff to follow county-level conversations and to report back with cost estimates and possible partnership options.
