Steger SD 194 board approves agreement to develop School Resource Officer program

Steger School District 194’s Board of Education voted to advance an intergovernmental agreement with the Village of Steger to create a School Resource Officer program, a step the superintendent said will formalize responsibilities for the officer’s role in district schools.
Superintendent Dr. Anthony McConnell told the board that representatives from the Village and the district will meet on Sept. 4 to work through the next steps for finalizing an IGA. “Once the IGA is agreed upon and approved by both boards, the implementation process will begin,” McConnell said in the superintendent’s report; the district noted that implementation may take a few months.
The board’s recorded action in open session shows the motion to approve the Intergovernmental Agreement passed on a 6–0 vote (moved by Jill Raymond and seconded by Beth Butkus). The minutes do not detail the IGA’s operational provisions in full; the board intends to use the agreement to outline responsibilities and expectations for the SRO’s role.
Board members said the program is intended to enhance safety and foster relationships between law enforcement and students. The board did not publish the draft IGA text in the minutes; the district said further steps and approvals will be required before an SRO is placed in schools.
