New CAASPP results show steady ELA gains, math holds; Board flags subgroup disparities

Kevin Fairchild, the district's Director of Assessment and Learning Support, briefed the Board Oct. 15 after the California Department of Education released 2024 CAASPP results.
Fairchild said statewide-style charts show the district's average distance from standard moved ELA from "medium" performance last year to "high" this year while math showed a marginal drop that, given estimated error bars, resulted in a maintained performance level. He noted, "these achievement levels are not the best indicators of student progress because a student who increases their score from one year to the next, but within the same color band, is not reflected in these numbers."
The presentation included districtwide charts for ELA, mathematics and science and subgroup breakdowns. Fairchild highlighted that students with IEPs significantly underperformed relative to general education peers and that English learners require additional supports; the district will use these findings to inform Local Control and Accountability Plan (LCAP) actions focused on Multilingual Learner Support, Students with Disabilities Support, and Multi-Tiered Systems of Support.
Fairchild also explained the district's average distance from standard for science in 2024 was -7.2 (nearly identical to 2023's -7.1) and said the state will release science cut points next month, which will determine Dashboard placement. The Board discussed statistical significance and how the district will report growth that may not change color bands on the state Dashboard.
Administration said the Educational Services department will continue to analyze subgroup differences and return to the Board with targeted actions as part of the LCAP cycle.
