Council backs Cliff Walk restroom expansion, asks staff to add interim portable facilities for 2025 season

Citing an estimated 1.3 million annual visitors to the Cliff Walk, council members and the Cliff Walk Commission urged the city to expand restroom capacity beyond the two existing units.
Councilor Holder and public commenters described long lines and poor seasonal capacity. Resident Pete Rice urged immediate action: "We need to direct the city manager to have at least 4 porta potties there during the summer," he said, arguing that prior seasonal tests showed portable units performed adequately.
Councilors agreed to add the project to the capital-improvement plan and amended the resolution to request both near-term temporary portable toilets for the 2025 season and permanent expansion to create year-round restroom access when the permanent facilities are funded and built. Staff said the city will coordinate with Salve Regina and preservation partners because portions of the Cliff Walk traverse partnership-owned land.
