Stonington committee directs ordinance to raise fines for abandoned, inoperable vehicles; Dec. 2 vote planned

President Bruce Dowdy opened discussion on Chapter 6, Article 5 (Abandoned, Stolen, Inoperable Motor Vehicles) and the Committee agreed to prepare ordinance language changing the penalty structure. The minutes record the intended change as an increase in the minimum fine and an increase in the maximum fine, and they specify that a separate offense will be deemed to occur 14 days after the initial fine and that additional fines may be levied every seven days thereafter.
The Committee directed staff to prepare the ordinance language for consideration at the Dec. 2, 2024 regular Board meeting. No formal ordinance number or vote on adoption was recorded at the Nov. 19 Committee meeting. The precise penalty amounts in the draft ordinance will be finalized in the ordinance text ahead of the Dec. 2 meeting.
