Board holds first reading on several policies, including searches and religious release time

General counsel Amy Moore led the board through the first reading of several district policies on Nov. 18. She recommended no substantive changes to Policy 3.12 (assignment and transfer of principals), and described updates to Policy 5.02 (search of student lockers, desks and personal possessions) that add delineations of probable cause and definitions for terms such as "contraband" and "reasonable suspicion." Moore said policy 5.07 (corporal punishment and prone restraint) required no change after recent legislative updates, and that Policy 5.12 (school-sponsored student publications) and Policy 5.44 (school meals) likewise required no changes at this time.
On Policy 5.56 (release time for religious instruction), Moore said the administration removed outdated language referencing church or religious bodies incorporated under Minnesota statute and clarified student responsibilities for making up missed class assignments under the policy; she invited the public to provide feedback through the policy committee process and the district website.
