Resident urges council to allow open-sided carports after enforcement removals

At the public-comment portion of the Aug. 5 meeting, Bill Lara said the city recently required removal of his carport and that similar action affected as many as 40 properties. He told the council the work represents a substantial personal cost and argued open-sided carports pose no visibility problem.
Lara urged the council to send the matter back to the planning commission with recommendations to allow carports that have only vertical poles and no sides and to revisit setback requirements that he said are impractical in his neighborhood. “Now my car is gonna get cooked all summer long in the sun, and in the winter, it's gonna get soaked all winter long,” he said, asking for a common-sense solution and a plan to allow affected homeowners to restore similar structures.
