Board says $500,000 renovation grant is unavailable this year; $50,000 study grant also deferred

City staff told the Historic Preservation Board the city would not apply for a $500,000 renovation grant this year because the grant requires finishing the project within two years and the city cannot meet that deadline. "After looking into the grant, it turns out that the grant has a deadline of finishing the project within 2 years, and we would not be able to meet that deadline this year," a staff member said. Staff named the Southern Martin Building as a candidate but said it is being considered for a future cycle instead.
Staff also reported the city declined to pursue a $50,000 grant to fund a study to identify historic structures because city management preferred to wait until zoning and map updates are complete. The staff member said the $50,000 study grant may be available in a later year and offered to revisit opportunities once redevelopment plans for the City Hall site and zoning work are further along.
