Parks, consultants weigh bollards, furniture and schematic redesign for Wheeler node safety

Mike Tunte (Parks) said council has directed Parks to consider safety improvements and that the group has prepared schematic design work dating from 2016–2022; Design Workshop’s Meg outlined four feature types—meridian barriers, site furnishings, bollards and schematic redesign with custom footings—and emphasized coordination with emergency services.
Commissioners asked about impacts of the bus stop at that corner, enforcement of the no‑bike rule on the mall, and the visual effect on a historic plaza. Meg noted retractable bollards have been tested on Wagner Alley and can be operated by a standard emergency access key and will drop if power fails; she warned that security‑rated bollards require deeper footing that will disturb existing historic brick and will need detailed analysis if pursued.
