Residents report persistent sewer odor and intermittent streetlight outages on E. 34th Street

Residents John Koplios (266 E. 34th St) and Eric Cainer (258 E. 34th St) told the board they have experienced persistent sewer odors for years and that a streetlight near 258 E. 34th Street has failed repeatedly despite previous repairs. Koplios said the problem recurs, is worse near freezing temperatures and that he may contact media or the EPA if it is not resolved.
Director of Public Infrastructure Dave Toepper said the Village has spoken with Thorncreek Sanitary about applying a chemical treatment intended to reduce odors and that he would follow up with them. Mayor Pro‑tem Lopez reiterated that Thorncreek manages the sanitary drainage system and that Village staff will coordinate follow‑up with the Village Administrator.
