Parks staff and consultant M&J Engineering presented an interim parking plan for South Henry Park at the April 1 meeting that would expand the lot from roughly 90 stalls to about 150 by repurposing the median on Southwest 58th Avenue and adjusting internal circulation.
The consultant said the design is roughly 55% complete and proposed 15 new LED light poles, expanded pedestrian routes and a CCTV system for security. The design estimates removal of 27 trees and replacement planting of 38 new hardwood trees; the consultant estimated hard construction costs between $850,000 and $1,000,000 and said design completion is expected around June.
Commissioners focused on preserving mature specimen trees (consultant said nine of the 27 are mature), the heat‑island effect of removing canopy, opportunities to plant larger, faster‑shading specimens, and whether shared parking agreements with adjacent school property could reduce tree impacts. Parks staff and the consultant agreed to explore alternatives including larger tree stock, relocation opportunities for mature specimens where feasible, one‑way circulation options for safety, and potential cross‑use agreements with neighboring parking inventories.
