Northwestern presents Advanced Learners review, flags equity gap in Mokena SD 159

Melissa Hinshaw of Northwestern University’s Center for Talent Development presented the results of an Advanced Learning Review to the Mokena School District 159 Board on Aug. 14, 2024. The review summarized the district’s data collection and analysis approach and noted participation from 839 students, 150 parents, and 96 educators, plus 33 classroom observations. "Elements of 'setting the stage': understanding the range of needs of students, the degree to which advanced students’ needs are currently being addressed, assuring the District is equitable in policies, practices, and services," Hinshaw said during the presentation.
The review found Mokena’s achievement profile is slightly above average on Fastbridge and IAR but identified a performance gap between low‑income students and their non‑low‑income peers and inconsistent growth measurement across assessments. Recommendations included communicating a clear continuum of services and procedures, investigating adoption of an assessment portfolio aligned to standards, expanding MTSS to include advanced learning services, and defining tiers and alignments. Board members and attendees asked questions following the presentation; no formal action was required.
