The Colorado Springs Historic Preservation Board voted unanimously to approve a report of acceptability for HIST-260006, a proposed roughly 60-square-foot front portico at 10 West Buenaventura Street in the Old North End. Staff told the board the design "met all of the applicable criteria for the board's approval," and the board adopted the staff recommendation.
Applicant representative Avery Thompson of Compass Architecture explained material choices and the challenge of matching old brick texture: "We're using, what we call out cement board, or wood to match the existing, and we're painting it white to also match the existing fake stoop…we're trying to currently find a brick that matches the existing," Thompson said. The contractor is pursuing color matches and may reuse bricks from existing stoop faces where appropriate.
Bill Gray, the department's preservation planner, told the board the portico is designed to visually match existing architectural elements on the Georgian-style house and does not alter significant historic features. After discussion of materials and long-term durability, a motion to approve was made and seconded; the clerk recorded a unanimous roll-call vote in favor. Staff also read appeal instructions to the record following the action.
The board's approval is a report of acceptability under the Historic Preservation Board's review process; any appeal must be filed within 10 days to City Council per the city's unified development code (see appeal instructions read into the record).
