Utilities report: Fort Myers says current capacity meets demand; $75M plant expansion underway

Jason Chandra, assistant director of public utilities, presented a system overview and capital program. He said the City of Fort Myers' utilities cover 49 square miles, serve about 100,000 residents and maintain roughly 32,000 customer accounts. "We have 1 water treatment plant that's about 13,000,000 gallons a day of capacity," Chandra said in his overview.
Chandra said well-field work included 11 additional wells coming online by 2023 (part of an FDEP consent order) and noted $35,000,000 in SRF principal-forgiveness funds to build more wells. On treatment capacity, he described a $75,000,000 project to add three treatment trains for a combined 9 MGD of additional capacity; design began in 2022 and the city broke ground in June 2025. Staff said the combination of well additions and plant expansions should meet the city's demand through build out under current projections.
