She said state reimbursements and one‑time capital requests mean the net impact to the county general fund is "just over $8,000,000."
Wheaton told the committee the probation and pretrial budgets account for the bulk of expenses under the chief judge: "the probation department, including pretrial services and its affiliated budgets, accounts for 76 of the total expended expenses under the chief judge," and about 57% of those expenses are covered by state reimbursements. She described an effort to limit recurring costs by classifying roughly $1.5 million as one‑time capital expenditures.
Wheaton highlighted increased workload tied to digital evidence and the need for improved case management and jury software, and said staff adjustments were made in consultation with county finance to remain fiscally mindful. She closed by pointing to mental‑health supports and services incorporated in the request and offered to provide follow‑up data to committee members who asked for more detail.
