The Village Board voted to authorize the mayor to sign a franchise agreement with Spectrum Northeast LLC, contingent on final clarifications and approval by the village attorney. Maggie Allen summarized the agreement during the board's public hearing, telling members the franchise governs use of public rights-of-way for Spectrum's infrastructure and does not impose service requirements on residents.
"This strictly is for infrastructure in the public property, in the public right of way," Allen said, noting the agreement focuses on the company’s use of streets and sidewalks rather than what services residents choose. Board members asked why many homes still use satellite dishes and whether Verizon Fios could be brought to the village; staff cited infrastructure, cost and a limited customer base as barriers. The board approved the authorization contingent on attorney review and clarification of a few outstanding items.
