Des Moines honors Hoover High after historic state soccer title

The Des Moines City Council opened its Aug. 3 meeting by presenting a certificate of special recognition to the Des Moines Hoover boys soccer team for winning the 2026 IHSAA Class 3A state championship. Mayor (speaker S1) read a certificate noting the team’s 16-win season and described the victory as the first state soccer title for a Des Moines Public Schools high school.
Coach (speaker S2) told the council the title capped a multi-year effort and highlighted the team’s diverse composition. “What these young men accomplished, they were the 1st city school in almost 30 years of, soccer on both the boys and the girls' side to win a state championship,” S2 said, and recounted an earlier overtime loss and the final’s comeback. The coach described players from several countries and called the team “pioneers.”
City leaders invited the team and coach forward for a photo with the certificate and congratulated the players, coaches and student body for what the certificate called “a historic season.”
