Commissioners approve MOU to study Southwest Porter County fire district and hire municipal advisors

Porter County commissioners voted to approve a memorandum of understanding among the county, the Town of Hebron, Boone Township and Porter Township to study the feasibility of a Southwest Porter County Fire District.
Stormwater official Mike Jabo introduced the MOU and said elected officials and citizens will be engaged across three committees (elected officials, citizens and a technical committee). He said the work will produce "2 to 3 funding scenarios looking at both fire and damages," and stressed the importance of balancing cost and response time for emergency services. Commissioner (S3) moved to approve the MOU and the motion passed by voice vote.
The board also approved a professional services agreement with municipal advisors to run financial analyses and produce territory and cost models needed for decision-making. Jabo said the county had already met with the auditor's office and GIS staff and that the municipal advisor would refine numbers and help the elected officials assess options. The contracts were approved and staff were directed to proceed with the study and return to the board with analyses and options.
