Minneapolis fire district asks county for help to expand station

Mike Smith and Craig Grimes of Ottawa County Fire District #2 told the Board of County Commissioners that the Minneapolis fire station is too small for modern apparatus and that the district has purchased an adjacent lot to expand.
"The price for a 60X100 building with a concrete pad, no electrical or plumbing is $386,760.00," Smith said, adding the building would be insulated and enclosed. He said the district currently has $60,000 in capital outlay but still needs funding for an approach, electrical work and a water connection.
Commissioner Duane Morris said he would check with the North Central Kansas Planning Commission and suggested reaching out to Choose Ottawa County for potential grant or planning assistance. Commissioner Scott Mortimer said the need is clear and the board acknowledged options for pursuing outside funding.
The presentation did not include a formal funding request motion or a decision; commissioners directed staff to explore grant and planning options and follow up at a subsequent meeting.
