Methow Conservancy details Mill Hill improvements; commissioners start DNR grant work

The Town of Twisp Parks & Recreation Commission heard an update March 11 from Methow Conservancy on planned improvements at Mill Hill, including entrance work, trail drainage and volunteer weed‑removal events. Daniel Senner of Methow Conservancy told the commission staff repaired trails last year and plan to remove a chain‑link fence at the Mill Hill entrance and replace it with a removable bollard to allow controlled vehicle access.
Senner said a signpost will be installed so signage can be removed from timbers, and a dog‑waste bag station has been planned. He said drainage elements are needed on the ridge trail to prevent further erosion, and that the base of the ridge trail where multiple paths meet will be closed to direct users to an easier trail installed last year. The Conservancy also plans weed‑removal work parties focused on the trail corridors.
Commissioner Norwill reported he had spoken with Bob Lloyd about installing a kiosk at the Mill Hill trailhead; Norwill said Lloyd is "working with Town on the process, but it has hit a standstill for the moment," indicating the kiosk installation is paused pending further coordination. Commissioners Nick Hershenow and Allen Jircik said they have begun work on a DNR trust‑lands transfer grant related to Mill Hill. The commission noted public input will be required and that they are waiting for a formal letter of intent from the Town before advancing the grant application.
The updates leave a mix of near‑term maintenance tasks and longer procedural steps: Methow Conservancy will proceed with physical trail work and volunteer events, while the commission advances the grant paperwork and seeks the town letter needed to move the DNR transfer process forward.
