Sheriff reports 145 incarcerated in county jail and continuing staffing challenges

Sheriff Brian Schenck told the committee the county jail was holding 145 incarcerated individuals at the time of the report, including 14 federal and 16 local board-ins; he also said 13 New York State parolees were detained for new charges and one parolee was detained for a violation. Schenck listed training and community engagement efforts including a three-day behavioral threat assessment and management training and reading programs with local schools.
Schenck said patrol members provided active-attacker response training to area organizations and a week-long train-the-trainer course was held to improve coordinated responses among fire, EMS, dispatch and law enforcement. He said recruiting and retaining qualified staff across divisions remains the department’s top challenge.
