Commissioners schedule Aug. 17 work session to reconcile UDO disputes, farm buffer remains contentious

County staff told the board that the Unified Development Ordinance (UDO) draft was scheduled to be posted online and asked whether the board was ready for public release. Several commissioners said they had not seen a final draft and requested time to reconcile outstanding issues, particularly buffer distances between farms and new residential development.
Commissioner Stovall and others emphasized farmers' concerns about protecting operations from nuisance complaints and requested a buffer that preserves productive acreage; he told the board he favors a 75-foot buffer (10 feet of clear zone plus a 35-foot wooded buffer plus remaining open space) as a reasonable compromise. Staff suggested a focused work session on Aug. 17 to give the board a chance to resolve major "big rock" items before releasing the draft widely.
The board agreed to schedule a morning work session Aug. 17 to discuss the UDO, keep the September planning-board process in mind, and ensure at least 30 days for public review once a final draft is released. Commissioners said the session would be public but would not serve as a formal public hearing; subsequent public hearings will follow the normal notice process.
