Harlingen commission votes to study speed‑humps on multiple streets, exempts Camelot Drive from installation
Summary
After hearing safety and emergency‑response concerns, the commission approved engineering studies for proposed speed‑hump locations (East 21st, Vista Verdes Circle West and others) but agreed to exclude immediate installation on Camelot Drive pending further analysis and input from police and ambulance services.

The commission approved engineering studies to evaluate proposed speed‑hump installations at several neighborhood locations, including East 21st Street and Vista Verdes Circle West, but declined to approve immediate installation on Camelot Drive. Supporters of a study said data would determine whether humps were appropriate; opponents — including emergency‑services stakeholders and a commissioner serving on an ambulance board — warned that physical humps can delay response times.
"When you put a speed hump...an ambulance has to hit the brakes and slow down," a commissioner on the ambulance board said, arguing that some thoroughfares are too important for hump installation. Commissioners adopted an amended motion to study the listed locations, instruct engineers to gather speed and width data, and direct police to consider enforcement alternatives (speed trailers) where humps are not feasible.
