City staff says Memorial Highway nearing completion; contractor to fix adjacent damaged segments

City project manager Jerrick updated the Board of City Commission on progress for Memorial Highway, saying the east cap is “very close to being complete” after a surface walkthrough with the Department of Transportation and the contractor.
Jerrick said the city, contractor and DOT identified a short segment that needs repair and that the contractor will complete those repairs as part of the overall project at no additional charge to the city. “So we should be made whole at the end of this project,” he said. He reported the two eastbound concrete lanes are finished from Main Street to the flood wall and that paving preparation will follow storm sewer installation on the torn‑up segments.
Commissioners pressed for a schedule and asked whether traffic would be limited to one lane through winter. Jerrick said the contractor’s phasing plan generally requires one lane in each direction with a center turn lane during construction and that some Saturday or Sunday work is possible by contractor request. On the timeline he offered a working estimate of about 75 more days to completion but said he would confirm interim dates with staff who track schedule milestones.
Beyond Memorial Highway, Jerrick outlined related projects including 1st Street reconstruction, utility tie‑ins and planned paving operations for several Street Improvement Districts. He reported the city completed the new water tower construction and that punch‑list and closeout items remain.
