Sheriff says county may host juveniles as detention center exceeds capacity; SRO grant application planned

Sheriff Russell Thornton told the board the juvenile detention center he met with last week is "running four or five kids over the amount," and discussed preliminary talks about using a county facility to house juveniles temporarily. Thornton said the detention center and its staff would provide schooling, medical staff and staffing while the county would provide the building; meals would be coordinated and reimbursed by the detention center.
Thornton said the plan is "still in the planning stages but may come quickly" and that any arrangement would be contingent on Department for Children and Families approval. He also told commissioners he will apply for a School Resource Officer grant in June to support school safety staffing.
Commissioners acknowledged the potential timeliness of the issue and asked to be kept informed; no formal budget decision or agreement was made at the meeting.
