Staff and counsel explained the state adopts certain codes on a regular cycle and that the council must choose whether to adopt state updates locally; they noted some provisions (for example, a residential sprinkler system mandate) had been removed in local modifications and therefore would not be imposed by the city despite model-code language. The motion passed by online vote with six ayes recorded in the transcript.
