The Marin County Board of Education provisionally appointed Cindy Johansson to fill the Trustee Area 3 vacancy after interviewing two finalists and hearing public comment.
During deliberations, trustees praised both candidates’ qualifications and debated whether to prioritize financial and construction experience or deeper education-sector experience and community representation. Trustee (speaker 12) moved to nominate Cindy Johansson; the motion was seconded and carried on a roll-call vote. The board paused to swear in Johansson before resuming the meeting.
Johansson told the board she would come “thoroughly prepared” and pursue training to serve effectively. “I will come to the meetings thoroughly prepared, staying up to date on educational issues in the county,” Johansson said during her interview.
Trustees who spoke in favor cited Johansson’s governance experience and work with education initiatives; trustees who supported the other finalist cited language skills and construction-law experience as important for current fiscal and facilities challenges. The roll-call vote recorded the motion as approved with one dissent: Trustee Nancy McCarthy voted no.
The board announced a short recess after the vote and administered the oath of office upon return. Johansson repeated the oath and was welcomed as the newest trustee.
