The Basalt Planning and Zoning Commission on Aug. 4 voted 5–2 to recommend denial of a proposed 93-room hotel and associated PUD amendment at 218 East Valley Road, sending the advisory recommendation to the town council for final action. The motion to recommend denial was made from the dais and seconded; roll call produced five votes in favor of recommending denial, two opposed.
Commissioners and residents raised recurring concerns about neighborhood impacts and infrastructure. Commissioners said they were unconvinced the project, as presented, adequately addressed parking, light and height impacts adjacent to Sopris Village and City Market. During deliberations a commissioner said the meeting raised the central question ‘‘Is this the right use?’’ for the parcel rather than smaller design details. The commission recorded its recommendation to deny and asked council to review the full record and transcript.
