Beecher CUSD 200U proposes dedicated daycare shuttle as temporary hold-at-school plan eases overcrowding

Beecher CUSD 200U officials said on Dec. 8 they plan to hire a driver and create a dedicated route for local day cares and the district's EC program to ease overcrowding on a route that has grown from about 15 registered daycare riders to 29 this school year.

"We're looking to hire a driver, and that driver's route would be specific to the EC and the daycares of Beecher," a district administrator said, describing a best-case schedule that would go into effect in January if a candidate accepts the offer. As an interim measure, the district will hold daycare students at the elementary school for roughly 20–30 minutes in the afternoon and then return to pick them up and drop them off, officials said, to prevent three students sharing a single seat.

The district framed the plan as a safety and workload solution: reducing the typical load on the regular route from as many as 72 riders toward a target of about 40–45 so drivers are not managing overcrowded buses and so students can be seated. "So now those 45 kids are home quicker and safer," the administrator said. Officials said they are actively recruiting drivers and already have candidates "in the works," while cautioning that hiring remains contingent on acceptance.

District staff also said the morning routine will not change until the new route starts; the interim hold-at-school step applies only to the afternoon while the dedicated shuttle is not yet in service. The committee discussed the plan with multiple parents and day care representatives during public comment. The district said it will send communications to affected families after the meeting with timing and details.
