Swisher awards asbestos abatement contract and sets demolition timing for downtown property
Summary

The council reviewed asbestos inspection reports for two city-owned buildings and considered bids for abatement before asking the DNR-required notifications and timelines be observed. Staff noted both buildings contain asbestos that must be removed prior to reuse or demolition and that abatement contractors provided estimates; the council moved to award the abatement contract to Echo Midwest at a stated price.
On the related downtown building, council members said a prospective buyer has had time to file required documentation and directed staff to tell the buyer they have until the last business day of the month to submit a building permit and Board of Adjustment requests or staff will proceed with scheduled demolition; demolition company availability around Sept. 18 was discussed. "Motion to approve, awarding bid for echo Midwest. At a price of 3,570," a council member said during the meeting.
