NCDOT highlights US 220 and US 29 upgrades, funded NC 87 project in Rockingham CTP

During the Aug. 3 presentation, NCDOT staff identified several countywide highway projects they described as modernization needs or upgrades to interstate standards.
"The first one I want to talk about is project 3, which is US 220. Hopefully you guys have heard of this before but we would like to upgrade US 220 to interstate standards," Emily Stepka said, listing proposed interchanges at Martinsville Loop, Stardust Church Road, NC 135 and Simpson Road and noting feasibility studies are underway.
Staff also described recommendations to improve US 29 to interstate standards (from Caswell County to Guilford County) with an interchange at Barnes Street, and called attention to a funded NC 87 widening (to a five‑lane facility including a center left‑turn lane) with a projected right‑of‑way date around 2030 and construction forecast near 2034. Stepka emphasized the recommendations are planning‑level and that design and funding would follow prioritization and programming processes.
