Mayor Walker and the council presented gatekeeper commendation awards to Lake City SkillsUSA competitors and their coaches for recent state and national finishes. The council recognized welding champions, drone-team medalists and their mentors and invited recipients forward for individual recognition and a group photograph.
A student representative who spoke said the CTE program started SkillsUSA only a year ago and already achieved state-level success, praising the community support (including a fire-department sendoff). “We just started Skills a year ago. So to win state already was kind of phenomenal,” the student said, adding that the experience will help students enter the workforce with marketable skills.
Council members thanked coaches and staff for mentorship and noted the value of technical skills programs for local economic opportunity and workforce development.
