The commission authorized staff to submit and accept a Florida Inland Navigation District (FIND) grant of up to $1,300,000 for phase 2 construction of City Island shoreline enhancement, and authorized a matching fund commitment of $1,300,000. The resolution passed 7-0.
John Nicholson and other public commenters urged the city to coordinate shoreline work across jurisdictional boundaries and to adopt an integrated seawall plan. Nicholson described repeated erosion at a location on City Island and warned the city is losing land "about 10 feet of soil and sand every storm." Rick Brown and others warned that deploying inconsistent seawall heights and segments could worsen flooding without a unified plan.
Staff indicated the grant would defray phase 2 construction costs and that the city would work with FDOT and other partners on design specifics. The commission approved the resolution and asked staff to continue coordination and bring back design options.
