Commission approves placing Raglan school tax measure on May ballot

The St. Clair County Commission voted to place two companion resolutions on the May ballot that would allow voters in the Raglan School attendance and tax district to consider a school tax measure.

Mayor Jessup and other local officials asked the commission to act after a request from the St. Clair County Board of Education. Mayor Jessup told commissioners the measure is about more than a building: "It's about all those kids that go to school there, and all those kids who have gone to school there and now continue to live in this county and are productive citizens here." The commission approved the resolution to call the election and a companion resolution acknowledging the commission's authority to abate the tax if the school's purpose ceased.

A board representative thanked the commission for the quick action and emphasized partnership to preserve K–12 education in Raglan. Commissioners approved the measures by voice vote with no recorded roll-call tally provided in the meeting transcript. The resolutions were described during the meeting as required steps to put the question before voters in the district in May.
