Board delays Laconia High program-of-studies to Sept. 1 for further review

The Laconia School District board agreed to defer action on the Laconia High School program-of-studies until the Sept. 1 meeting so administration can supply additional information and the policy subcommittee can review proposed changes.
The superintendent asked the board for "indulgence" to allow administration and principal Hines more time to gather answers and produce a clean, updated program-of-studies packet, saying the material should come as a recommendation from administration to the full board. "If it takes more than 1 meeting to approve it, that's fine," the superintendent said, adding the goal is to have program and handbook information available to families when students choose classes.
Board members discussed the review process and stressed public board discussion for matters that will be voted on. One member raised concerns about embedding policy language in handbooks and asked for clearer communication on what will be voted on and when. The superintendent said the timeline will be accelerated and that administration aims to have program-of-studies changes ready for action by January if possible.
The board did not vote on the program at the Aug. 4 meeting and directed the superintendent to return with updated materials and a clear process for review and voting.
