Cedarhurst adopts local law allowing limited nonprofit electronic message signs

At its March 9 meeting the Cedarhurst Board adopted Local Law 2026-01, which amends Chapter 211 to allow eligible nonprofit organizations, schools and religious institutions within the General Business Zone to erect electronic message signs under defined conditions. The adopted text restricts permitted content to organization schedules, programs and events; limits donor recognition so it is not commercial advertising; caps sign size at 54 inches by 72 inches and height at 7 feet above grade; requires a 10-foot setback; and limits content changes to no more than three per hour. The law also bars flashing or animated content and limits illumination hours to the organization's normal operating hours, extinguishing signs by 10:00 p.m. unless the Board sets different conditions.

Mayor Benjamin Weinstock announced the hearing and said the Village will publish the guidance. The minutes record that "the hearing was closed and the Local Law was adopted" on motion of Trustee Israel Wasser, seconded by Trustee Myrna Zisman. The adopted text gives the Village Board discretion to impose conditions and requires permits, annual renewals and the ability to revoke permits for noncompliance.
