Board approves up to $112,000 to replace Hewitt Tech Center boilers

The Laconia School District board voted 7–0 on Aug. 4 to authorize up to $112,000 to replace two 14‑year‑old boilers at Hewitt Technical Center.

Superintendent (speaker 5) told the board the manufacturer for the existing boilers is no longer in business and parts are unavailable. "We have 0.333 quote coming in, as well. But, really, we have 2 options. 1 is, to expend up to a $112,000 and but no more," the superintendent said, explaining the district's timeline concerns and the tight mechanical access that will require specialized equipment.

Administration said it is collecting three bids and recommended using the district's stabilization account to cover the one‑time cost; the superintendent noted the stabilization account balance at roughly "1.4" (as stated in the meeting). The board discussed guarantees and lifecycle expectations for a new industrial boiler system; the superintendent said a standard installation typically carries a one‑year warranty and a 20–25 year expected service life for properly installed systems.

Board members also noted the procurement steps required when using funds subject to trustee or city oversight and the need for any required public hearing before expenditure. The motion to replace both boilers and expend up to $112,000 carried on a 7–0 voice vote.

The board instructed administration to procure the remaining quotes, coordinate with the city manager and trustees on any required public hearing, and return with firm contract terms.
