Board advances work on teacher exit survey to better understand turnover

The board updated members on efforts to gather better data about teacher turnover through an exit-survey initiative.
Chair Darren Hornbeck said the board previously wrote to the State Board and state superintendent requesting available exit-survey data and exploring options for new data collection. "So what we did is we produced a a group. So the chair, of course, myself, and doctor Shockley, along with Kelly Meadows, began working with Rachel Heiss on the AIB, to see if we could actually carry that out," Hornbeck said. He described early work on question design, logistics and possible funding options and said a small pilot would likely be the first step.
Members requested continued involvement in designing the survey and expressed interest in using the data to understand whether lower vacancy numbers reflect fewer openings or different district staffing decisions. The board said it will report back on progress at its next meeting and invited members to join a subgroup to develop the instrument and implementation plan.
